13th Anatomy of  Islands  Symposium (Jelsa, island of Hvar, 25-27.9.2025)

The 13th Anatomy of Islands Symposium Fragile Islands and/or Islands of Fragility: Island Lives, Contemporary Transformations and Uncertain Futures was held in Jelsa on the island of Hvar from 25 to 27 September 2025. The international scientific and professional symposium brought together 38 researchers who presented 29 papers, offering multidisciplinary insights into the fragilities of island worlds — how they are shaped, manifested, and understood in contemporary contexts.
The Institute for Migration Research was a co-organizer of the symposium.
Dr. Marko Turk presented the paper “Let’s Go Outside, What Are We Doing in the Classroom!” The Island as an Educational Resource in Teaching, presenting findings from the ETNOTOK project. Project collaborators Dr. Ana Perinić Lewis, Dr. Tomislav Oroz, Ela Lipanović, and Šime Vukman were members of the Organizing Committee, while Dr. Sanja Klempić Bogadi and Dr. Sonja Podgorelec were members of the Scientific Committee
This year, representatives of the Ministry of Demography and Immigration — Ante Babić, Director of the Directorate for the Implementation of Public Policies for Demographic Revitalization, and Martina Križanić, Head of the Service for Demographic Revitalization of Rural Areas and Islands — joined the symposium.
A working meeting was held between Ministry representatives and the mayors and municipal heads of the island of Hvar, addressing current challenges faced by the islands and their communities. Participants included Marija Marjan (Mayor of Jelsa), Ivan Slavić (Mayor of Sućuraj), Jerina Ćurin (Deputy Mayor of the City of Hvar), and Marianda Vranković Moškatelo (Deputy Mayor of Stari Grad).
At the end of the symposium, a meeting of the Anatomy of the Island – Center for Research and Development association was held, reflecting on this year’s event and agreeing on a tentative theme for the 14th Anatomy of Islands Symposium, which will focus on island heritage.
